Newspaper stories

For eighteen months following the terrorists attacks of 11th September 2001 I watched in bewilderment and horror as the UK Government drifted towards an illegal war against Iraq.  There was ample evidence that Iraq had no formal links with al-Qaida, had no weapons of mass destruction and did not pose a threat to the West.  So why did we go to war?

As the prospect of war grew ever more likely, I searched the media for answers.  After all, there was a plethora of analysis from across the political spectrum in our newspapers wasn't there?

One day I picked up my camera and looked at the headlines through my viewfinder.  I hoped that the action of photographing them might make them more comprehensible; more intelligible; less surreal.

Subsequently, I tried to capture headlines from events I'd missed the first time around, but it wasn't that easy.  I discovered that photographing a newspaper is regarded with grave suspicion by parts of the university and legislature in Cambridge.  In any case, to read about Bush's Axis of Evil speech at the time you'ld have had to work your way to page 15 of The Guardian.  Do we really have the media we deserve?  What does that say about us? And who led us to war?
